On a scouting trip in the Catskill Mountains, I walked a few feet from a stone wall. There I saw a nesting bearded wild turkey hen. (Hens with beards are rare.) With eggs close to hatching, older hens will hold fast to their positions, even when predators pass nearby. This young hen learned a valuable lesson and she will not make the same mistake twice. Because stone walls are a veritable highway for wild creatures, two days later she lost all of her eggs to predators.
